Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been a thread holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence

At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
